CORDARO ANSWERS THE QUESTION,
“WHERE IS THE NEXT PARTY?” ON CNBC’S CLOSING BELL
NEW
YORK, NEW YORK - May 20, 2011 - Christopher J. Cordaro, CFA®, CFP®
surprised CNBC Closing Bell hosts Bill Griffeth and Mandy Drury on May 13, 2011
when he explained that RegentAtlantic Capital has been out of commodities all
year long, well before the recent significant downturn in commodity prices.
Cordaro, RegentAtlantic Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer
quipped, "I'd rather leave the party early and
have less of a hangover on the way down." (Emphasis mine)
His response prompted Drury to ask, Chris, if
you like to leave the party while things are pumping, Lady Gaga’s playing,
everyone is lying on the floor…what would you be getting out of now?
Cordaro responded, “We're out of commodities and REITs,
but what I think is really interesting is to
ask 'Where is the next party?' Cordaro advised,
"Oddly enough, we think the next party is in
Europe. If we look at European stocks, they're selling incredibly
cheap relative to the rest of the world because of the sovereign debt crisis
hanging over it. You want to buy them when
they’re cheap, and before the party’s over, you want to sell them to somebody
else."
(The interview continued with a further discussion of the various asset
allocation changes RegentAtlantic has made since September 2010.)
Key Point: Allow Your Inner Metaphorian Out!
When I congratulated Chris afterwards on that metaphor, he told me it was
completely "spur of the moment." It was no surprise to me that the party
metaphor just popped into his head, because metaphors are so much a part of our
daily thought process. And did it pay off! Drury’s pick-up on Chris' party theme
suddenly injected new energy and color into the conversation and turned a fairly
routine interview into a memorable, as well as meaningful, discussion, engaging
for the listeners and scoring some wonderful PR for RegentAtlantic.
You can do the same in your critical communication situations. Just let those
metaphors out!
Make what you say pay — with metaphors.
